Your favorite rapping duo is back and ready for more action! Originally announced wayyyyy back in the day (February 2015 to be exact), this game was actually Kickstarted and successfully raised over a half a million dollars. For awhile there, I pretty much forgot about this game and was occasionally reminded by the developers through Kickstarter that this would see the light of day eventually. Originally scheduled for release during the holiday of 2015, numerous challenges were faced during development with porting the game to various platforms and debugging. But I am glad to say it’s finally here and ToeJam & Earl are back and better than ever.
As we get started, let me say this: I am not a huge fan of ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron and ToeJam & Earl III: Mission To Earth. Neither game holds a candle to the original in my humble opinion. The first game had the formula down perfectly. Collect presents, avoid baddies and find ship pieces. It really is as simple as that. The other two games leave much to be desired, and I would venture to say that anyone who loves the first game as much as I do would agree. This is why ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove succeeds, it strips down to what originally made the first game special and fun while improving on the tried and true formula.
So what has changed? Well, for starters you can choose from nine unique characters each with a different style of play, including “retro” versions of both ToeJam and Earl. Over sixty different presents exists, some with awesome power-ups like the Icarus Wings and some that are more unpredictable that can cause chaos during your exploration for the Rapmaster Rocket pieces. Over 50 humans to interact with exist, some which help you power-up and others that impede your progress like the classic Hula Girl who insists you do a lame hula dance every time you come near her. There are also a ton of new and remixed tunes for you to jam out to while scouring this lame planet named Earth.
One of the best things about ToeJam and Earl: Back In The Groove is that for a little bit more cash, you can purchase a physical version of either the PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch version for a short time through Limited Run Games. The preorders for this limited physical edition only are open until March 30th, 2019, after that, they are gone forever! If you are like me and love to collect games, this is a must for your shelf. If you are a fan of the original game, rogue-likes, or even just some funky fresh beats, you owe it to yourself to check out ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove immediately!
