The Selesnya Conclave

The Selesnya Conclave

Welcome to the second Guilds of Ravnica guild spotlight, the Selesnya Conclave! For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Magic: The Gathering plane known as Ravnica, allow me to give you a brief intro that will help you better understand the succession of reviews that will be posted over the next few months. Ravnica is a city that sprawls to the corners of the plane it exists on, an ecumenopolis, if you will. Very few have been close enough to the border to even have a chance at just spotting the city limits. At the time of this post, there are 10 active guilds who have each carved out a section of the city-proper. The guilds are bound by magic to obey laws, but a law abiding city wouldn’t make for a great story, now would it? There are of course loopholes, the major one being that the upholder of the magical laws is a planeswalker named Jace Beleren, who isn’t always on the plane of Ravnica. This leads to skirmishes, plots and subterfuge between the guilds, who are all jockeying for control of the city. The Selesnya Conclave is but one of the 10 guilds, but there will be spotlights for the other 9 guilds coming your way soon, if they’re not already posted. Please enjoy some pics of the new miniatures from Wizkids that go with this set as well!

There exists in the plane of Ravnica, a being believed to be the embodiment of nature, known as Mat’Selesnya the Worldsoul. This entity was, and is, the founder of the Selesnya Conclave. Although Mat’Selesnya’s origins aren’t fully known, it’s goal, and the goal of the entire conclave is to harmoniously unite civilization and nature under its banner. This differs from their antithesis, the Gruul Clans, in that the Worldsoul believes that coexistence is possible, whereas the Gruul work tirelessly to return the city of Ravnica to nature.

Mat’Selesnya is an ancient being, and over the years no one has able to confirm its true form. In today’s Ravnica, which is 10,076 calendar years since the original Guildpact was enacted, the current guildmaster of the Selesnya Conclave is now an amalgamation of beings known as Trostani. She came into existence shortly after the Conclave lost their connection to the Worldsoul. In an attempt to reconnect, three Dryad sisters, Oba, Ses and Cim entered into a trance-like state while physically bound to an old oak tree. It was during this trance that the sisters successfully contacted Mat’Selesnya, and were then grafted to the oak tree and ultimately to the City-Tree, Vitu-Ghazi. Trostani now leads the Selesnya Conclave in furthering the influence of the Worldsoul and its life-giving message.

The Selesnya guild combine the magics from the green and white schools, which are focused on enhancement, restoration, animal companionship and of course, the command of natural elements, both destructive and replenishing. While they do belong to two of the  “good” domains of magic, do not mistake their end goals in Ravnica. They are a collective mind, with a collective goal of assimilating and blanketing the other guilds with their mindset. Uniting all guilds by dissolving them and absorbing them.

Among the ranks of the Conclave, you will find druids, dryads, treants, elementals, elves and healers. These archetypes are almost always aligned with the side of the good and just, and so it’s natural that they’d gravitate toward the mission of Mat’Selesnya. Some of the lesser known, but much more esteemed members of the Conclave are the Ledev Guardians. The Ledev were knights that were previously assigned to protect the roadways, and they act as the mounted forces of Selesnya. Humanoid guardians ride dire wolves, reared from birth to form an unbreakable bond, but there are also centaurs and other demi-humans that call themselves Ledev as well.

I’ve included some images of the miniatures from Wizkids that go along with the Selesnya Conclave, as well as some that fit the theme. These are extremely high quality miniatures, and I am continuously impressed with the pre-painted line. As someone who doesn’t have the tools, or the time, to paint minis, it is so refreshing to be able to pop a booster pack and hit the ground running. Some of the bonus miniatures are from the Companion Starter Set One and the Spell Effects: Arcane Fury and Divine Might bundles, which are an amazing way to get started with your Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica mini collection. Check out the links throughout this article for where to grab these goodies!
