Madden...Might Have Gotten Me Again.
Last year, I was roped back into buying Madden. I found that many of my frustrations with the game series for the last decade are still present but I liked a few of the new game modes with an emphasis on Draft Champions which is being renamed MUT Drafts. Cashing in on the popularity of fantasy football, draft champions and their micro-transaction heavy Madden Ultimate Team or MUT let you build super teams of players all over the league. In last year's game I built a franchise where I had to draft every player on my roster from a giant pool as every team dumped their roster back into the pot.
I know Brady is a big "get" for them but that makes two Patriots in a row on the cover. I imagine they have to spread the love next year.
However, as much fun as I had building teams I didn't usually love playing with them especially online where the play and strategy is a weird freak version of the sport where you never punt, and your enemies too often get rewarded for playing like Asshats. Nothing makes you want to break your game in half like watching someone go for it on 4th and 18 from their own 12 yard line and hit a 88 yard Touchdown, when they are playing with a lead, in the second quarter. That is garbage and I wish the game punished plays that defy logic. There is a difference between an unconventional call or a surprise onside kick and being moronic and the online play I experienced wasn't football. However, despite that the features I liked were fun and I got hours of enjoyment out of it. This year promises an update to a new Frostbite graphics system, the addition of online MUT play with friends, and an all new story mode. I am curious enough that I will have a copy on release day and Chris promises to get it too so if I play online I just have to deal with the normal amount of idiocy I get with playing alongside Chris. And to try even further to maximize my enjoyment I plan to create a franchise where I don't play a down. I will be a true GM and see if I can work the various machinations to get myself to the big game.
