Dice Masters - Defenders Team Pack Explored
To satisfy fans between each large set release (and to cash in on media releases) Wizkids has been releasing Team Packs for its Dicemasters game. We last looked at the Dr. Strange pack which was timed to the release of the hit Marvel movie, and now we get the Defenders right as the hype for the Netflix series nears its climax. However, I should note that the license is clearly based on the comics so the characters you may expect from the shows are not all present. The set comes with eight characters each getting two dice and three cards, and true to being a team pack the majority share an affiliation with seven Defenders heroes and one villain from Hydra (Loki) included. However, the synergy of the team isn't obvious as only Luke Cage and a single Clea card have specific Defender specific abilities. This set is also heavy on expensive characters, and I expect a lot out of any character costing 6 or more as I expect them to turn the tide in a battle. So if you are looking for some heavies to weave into your decks check this team out.
Clea - The "Star Crossed" Clea is very useful in a defensive manner allowing you to block any character freely. The "On Stranger Tides" makes Dr. Strange and Clea a powerful duo but as you will see soon, the Doctor is also an expensive card making it harder to field them both. "Mistress of the Dark Dimension" would be useful against a player spamming Lightning characters which is a popular strategy, otherwise I don't care for it.
Doctor Strange is focused exclusively on action dice, but if you love to build your strategy around them, he can wildly improve their usefulness by multiplying the impact or getting those dice back into your hand more quickly.
So Hellcat is the only character in this set who costs less than 5 to buy, so if you want to go heavy on Defenders she is mandatory. Having said that her utility is low, i guess I would take "Hell's Belle" and try to keep my opponent from buying the characters he wants.
Hulk is a beast. He usually is, and I think all of these cards are useful if you want to unleash the green monster, although my favorite is "Banner's Not Home" which will decimate the enemy team's defenses. Or you can pair "All the Rage" with some weak characters that you allow to die to deal direct damage.
Iron Fist's "Pulling Punches" is an amazing counter to a sidekick centric deck and is useful at all times. You can probably throw away the other two cards.
Jessica isn't bad, I think her "Redeemed" card would be handy and the others have some use. But her defense isn't that high for "Mother of the Year Award" to be amazing. It would force your opponent to subject decent blockers to her heavier attacks though.
Just like in the Marvel Cinematic universe Loki is everywhere even when he probably shouldn't be. He continues to be a useful defense trickster character. Most teams are built on particular energy types so the "Master of Delusion" could be confounding and would be my choice from this set.
Last but not least is Luke Cage who is the glue of the set. If you actually build a complete Defenders team you might require the "Street Sweeper" making it easier to buy the expensive team. Otherwise, you have "Harlem Raised" which is his best card to pair with other sets, and "Always Forward" which boosts all your Defenders. The dice faces are pretty hefty for this set so adding anything to them will make this a formidable team.
