Yo-Kai Watch has taken the world by storm, with the first Nintendo 3DS game releasing in North America last Fall. While this has been a craze over in Japan for years, players here have yet to experience even half of the games released in the West. However, developer Level-5 (Dark Cloud, Professor Layton) has released a brand new mobile puzzler Yo-Kai Watch Wibble Wobble. The story loosely follows the original Yo-Kai watch saga, where you must acquire Yo-Kai to join your team to battle even stronger Yo-Kai. Throw in boss battles and secret areas, and repeat.
The gameplay is pretty simple. There is a series of Yo-Kai blobs on your screen, if you pop them you will do damage to the Yo-Kai you are fighting. However, if you chain together like Yo-Kai that are next to each other you will create a large Yo-Kai blob which does massive damage to your opponent. Doing this will create bonuses to appear on the board such as a level increase for the blobs, as well as filling your special meter. The soultimate special moves are triggered when the meter is full for a particular Yo-Kai and the player taps the character to initiate the devastating move. This could result in removing certain blobs on the board in a particular shape, by type, or some other bonus.
Additional Yo-Kai will join your team in a few different ways. First, if you defeat a Yo-Kai in battle, it has a chance to befriend you and join your team. Another way is to receive a coin by just launching the game during a special promotion. Finally, you can also use your "Y-Money" in game currency to take a spin at the crank machine. Building your team is important to allows you to become diverse in your Yo-Kai watch types to exploit the weaknesses of your enemies.
The game is on a daily timer, allowing you to play in 15 minute increments for every "soul" you have stockpiled. These refresh as time goes on, and you can also receive souls from your friends if they have your friend code. As with any freemium game, you can play this game without spending a single cent and will be entertained. However, those who wish for a quicker way to progress can spend real money on Y-Money to acquire more Yo-Kai and power-ups at the crank machine. Overall, this game has a lot of polish applied (as most Level-5 games do.) and is quite addicting for a mobile game. I really like the fresh take on the matching of the blobs rather than the strict grid of most "match three" type games. The Yo-Kai are funny, and the only thing I found annoying was the timer. Other than that the game is excellent, and you should check it out if you love either Yo-Kai Watch or puzzle games.
