Sean says: What began as an award winning smart-phone title several years back has matured into a full-on console sequel for the PS4 & PS Vita. Dating back to 2009, Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon is the Puzzle/Platformer successor to the well-received iOS native title Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor. Through a series of improvements and updates over the original, this year’s installment excels above & beyond its predecessor in every way possible.
As a score-based puzzle platformer reliant on precision movement, a set a tangible controls is vital for executing intended moves throughout gameplay. Developer Tiger Style brings this to the table as a welcome addition to the console editions of Rite of the Shrouded Moon, making the experience much more enjoyable for those easily frustrated with capacitive touch-screen as a main source of control. This makes the Vita variant the more desirable part of the cross-buy package, as touch-screen controls are still present where it makes sense – not to mention the portability factor.
Another improvement to RotSM is the updated visuals, which look better than ever on the Vita’s OLED screen. Looking past its high-definition limitations, gameplay on Vita’s 960x544 OLED screen bring developer Tiger Style’s masterpiece to life with vibrant & carefully detailed environments. Regardless of which platform you play it on, the world of RotSM is a giant leap in the visual department from its predecessor.
Hands down, the obvious game-changer comes with real-time environmental conditions. This newest installment in the Spider IP uses a series of real-life conditions in order to fully experience and obtain 100% completion. Certain events can only be triggered if the time of day; year, & weather conditions are right. This alone becomes a game within itself, making the player keep their console (or preferably Vita) local at all times so they never miss a beat. This is especially rewarding for the trophy hunters of the world, as developer Tiger Style has done Spider: RotSM a massive service by adding a prestigious & challenging platinum trophy that can be earned with an investment into this new real-time environmental system, as there are a plethora of secrets to uncover throughout the world.
For a game that offers an experience as unique as Spider: RotSM, I cannot think of a better way to spend money on the PlayStation Store - especially if it’s a quality portable you’re after. The time spent uncovering the secrets within the world of RotSM is enchanting and gratifying, offering players a fulfilling experience like never before. Sony’s handheld brings the beautiful and vibrant world to life, even with its outdated qHD screen resolution. Improving in every way possible, Spider: Rite of the Shrouded Moon offers a unique Cross-Buy offering that must be checked out by both puzzle & platformer fanatics alike. Priced at $10, you’re in for a real treat with this one.
