Star Realms – My Needless Mission to Overcrush my opponent
Star Realms is an excellent deck building game that exists both in tabletop and digital forms. At work when I am on break it is one of the few games I can play on my phone without an internet connection since I work inside a massive structure that was seemingly designed to interfere with cell service. I have beaten the story mode, I have conquered the challenges on the different difficulty settings so I had to cook up my own challenges. This week I decided it would be fun to play a game of "delay" and see if I can exhaust the deck and keep the opponent from killing me while I refuse to win on purpose.
This attempt needs a few things to go right in the first couple turns. I need to procure a means to buying up all of the 7 cost ships because if my opponent gets them it will be tough to keep him from whittling me away over time. I chose to start the challenge against easy AI.
On my 4th attempt I had the magic starting run that I wanted. My team was heavy on purchasing and healing to start so I could buy up all the best items and weather the initial salvos. I then focused on thinning out my deck so I got to my better cards faster and after a few rounds I had the ability to win the game but I would just spend my attack destroying any bases and only delivering hits if they wouldn’t be fatal. My healing cards by now had gotten me back up to starting health and started to climb higher. My collection of bases was nearly impenetrable. And then finally the deck was empty and you couldn’t buy anything but the 2 cost Explorer cards. It was time to finish him. On my final turn I amassed 99 hit points (it stopped counting at that point) my health stood at 86 and the hammer which was cruelly denied brought merciful death to the struggling AI.
A look at his team shows that the best ship acquired was the 6 cost Blob Carrier and he had two 6 cost bases. The rest of the team was pretty weak including a collection of 8 explorers because the easy AI doesn’t know when to scrap those and tighten up the deck. I was able to acquire every other ship that was a 6 cost or greater and owned both of the 8 cost bases. I intend to try this challenge at higher levels to see how far I can take it so I can squeeze a little more enjoyment out of the game, feel free to try it for yourself.
