Resident Evil 7 – A Return to Basics (I hope)
Resident Evil is a long running franchise that has had some real highs (Resident Evil 2 and 4) and some real lows and following up one of the worst in the series, 7 was going to signal the rebirth or the death of the series for many. The development team has decided to return to a smaller scale story, a renewed focus on horror and to diminish the reliance on gunplay and outsized weaponry. The most surprising change is switching from the 3rd person perspective they helped make popular to a first person perspective. If you are a long running fan of the series you will probably have a love/hate relationship with that 3rd person perspective as you probably died many times because the camera angle offered wasn’t ideal, but you also fell in love with the game with that style. So while as a purist I bristle at some of these changes, I do want to see them strip down some of the nonsense and get back to basics.
The game is also moving away from their heavily repeated characters to introduce entirely new characters and the main protagonist is not a Special Forces officer or cop, so we can expect him to fight more desperately and out of his element which can be more intense. The demo teaser game Beginning Hour was pretty solid and played more like a horror movie than a Resident Evil action fest, and I find that despite the bad taste of 6 I am getting excited for the 7th entry. My only remaining fear is that the VR experience they designed the game to allow ruining things for those of us who do not want that level of immersion in a survival horror game. I am not trying to have a heart attack IRL. Check out the trailer below and perhaps you will join me in excitement for the next release slated for Jan 2017.
For those of you excited about the VR, the "Kitchen" Demo looks intense.
