Back in 2007, companies were gearing up to release next generation hits on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. However, Atlus still had a few titles in the pipeline for the now classic PlayStation 2 system. One of these later releases was a sleeper hit by Atlus called Odin Sphere. What set Odin Sphere apart from the rest of the shovelware being released at the time, was the all hand-drawn visuals and unique 2-D gameplay. Regardless of the late release, the game eventually became popular enough to be released as part of PlayStation's Greatest Hits line of software titles.
Almost a decade later, a remake of the original Odin Sphere will be released later this year. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir will be released on Playstation 3, PS Vita, and of course PlayStation 4. The remake will include remastered graphics, improved gameplay, full voice overs, expanded worlds, and additional all-new monsters. There also is a special collector's edition called the Storybook Edition that will only be released with the PlayStation 4 version of the game. Retailing for $79.99, this is actually one of the special editions that I consider to be worth the price of admission. Included in the Storybook Edition is:
- PlayStation 4 copy of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
- 64-page hardcover art book
- Potion Recipe T-Shirt
- Premium outer box
- Collector's Metal Slipcase for the game
- Mystery Art print
Overall, I think this is worth the extra $20 to spend to get all of this cool stuff listed above. I am a huge Odin Sphere fan, and I fully expect this collector's edition to sell out and retain value since it is an Atlus product based on a well-established title. Preorder Odin Sphere Leifthrasir: Special Edition now while you still can, the game releases on June 7th.
