Throwback Thursday - League of Legends
I love hopping from hot new game to the next like everyone else but every once in awhile an older game pulls me back in. Like suddenly getting the itch to build again in Minecraft, or for many the sweet grind of an MMORPG like World of Warcraft. Today, I decided to load up League of Legends which is a massively popular online battling game akin to DOTA to see how it has fared with updates and new content since I last played it a year ago. I expected a long download period as my files got updated and so I thought I would check out their site for collectibles. They have added some cool Amiibo style figurines, and some artwork for sale (Example pictured above). Sadly, none of my regular characters got that treatment. I guess my heroes might be lame now, or maybe got nerfed into oblivion.
I stopped playing League of Legends for the reasons most people give you when they walk away from the game. The other people you are forced to play with are some of the worst on the planet. Gaming trolls isn't new to online gaming but I always felt like this series got the worst of it because the team balance is so fragile that one AFK player, Jerk, or feeder dramatically tilted the match one way or another. But that delicate balance was also what delivered the best experiences like when you come back from near death to win, or you finally got to bear down on the boot you had on your opponents throat due to your well planned strategy. I know the creators of the game were constantly trying to reward being a good person in the game and to punish being a abusive menace, and I wonder if they got it worked out yet.
After over an hour downloading updates, I started reading some of their news and found they now can ban people for inappropriate comments within 15 minutes of a match ending where they send you a copy of your sins along with your notice. I tried to google translate the latin above for fun and it was gibberish. Missed opportunity Riot Games. I was really hoping for some delightfully silly insults to reward my curiosity.
I checked my download bar again. 89% so close. I am starting to regret this article choice as I anticipate my 2 week old baby waking up with a wail any minute and I haven't gotten a chance to play yet. But then I found this above video which was exactly what I needed. A quick rundown of what changed in LoL in the past year so I am not lost. I decide on a character I plan to play with so I can research what items I will want to buy for them in game. I decide to roll with Blitzcrank who is easily added to almost any team and usually at least one teammate loves you for pulling enemy champions back to their waiting arms for a quick brutal death.
100%!!! I can finally play. Wait, can't remember my password. OK. I've got it after 4 attempts. As soon as the game is loaded I am granted a free skin upgrade for one of my characters for having a flawless complaint record. It is nice of them to notice, and to keep that streak going I decide my first foray will be against intermediate bots so I can shake off the rust without pissing everyone off.
My first match was a success. I was proud as my first attempt to time Blitzcrank's snatching attack was accurate and helped put the first kill on the board for my team. I think I might have to play again tomorrow, so this throw back may have rekindled an old addiction. Since I last played they added 23 champions bringing the total to 126 so I have some new players to test out and maybe get a new favorite. If you have a game released over 2 years ago that might be worth dusting off let us know. Maybe Throwback Thursday can be a regular thing.
