I can't believe I get to post a double dose of Amiibo news this week. First we announced on Monday the release of the Mega Yoshi Yarn Amiibo. Last night at Nindies Night at PAX, the Game Grumps announced that a Shovel Knight Amiibo is coming out soon. If you have never played Shovel Knight before, it is an indie game by Yacht Club Games that plays a lot like an older NES game such as Mega Man. The game has a lot of polish, making it one of my favorite indie games released to date. Although the game has been available on Steam for some time, the game is getting a physical release on consoles as well. Xbox One and Playstation 4 are getting exclusive characters such as Battletoads and Kratos, but Nintendo has upped the ante with an entirely new gameplay mode. Take a look at the trailer below:
The Shovel Knight Amiibo unlocks co-op mode on the WiiU version of the game, and allows character customization on both the 3DS and WiiU versions. Exclusive challenge levels can also be unlocked using the figure. The funny thing is that the WiiU version of the game might end up being the definitive version to get, which can not be said for many multi-platform games. This opens up a new world for Nintendo fans, allowing 3rd parties like Yacht Club Games to use their first party technology. This could allow for future Amiibo to be created by other 3rd party . Who wouldn't want to see Mega Man Boss Master Amiibos? Or maybe Castlevania Amiibos? The possibilities are endless. Unfortunately no release date was announced for the Shovel Knight Amiibo, but something tells me that this figure may launch along side of the physical release of the games on October 13th.
