Back in 2009, Nintendo released Picross 3D, an under the radar title that initially received little attention. Based on the flat, puzzle picture game Mario's Picross for the original Game Boy system, the Nintendo DS was the natural platform for the progression of the series. Players were shown a series with blocks with numbers, and were able to rotate the entire puzzle to determine which blocks were not needed and could be removed. Since the release of the original Picross 3D, numerous versions of the 2D version have appeared on the eShop for download. Several clones have also appeared on the iOS and Google Play stores as well for mobile phones and tablets. However, the 3D version was constantly ignored for the past six years, until now. Nintendo announced yesterday that a new entry of the 3D version is nearing completion.
Picross 3D 2 is scheduled for release on October in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS system. It will be available for purchase in both digital and physical cartridge form. Since the translation for this title is most likely pretty light, I would not be surprised if this releases shortly after in the North America and in Europe. Check out the trailer below:
It's also been announced that Amiibo support will be included with this title, allowing extra in game content. Once an Amiibo figure is placed on the portal, a puzzle relating to the character will be available to play. This added functionality is one of the first excellent examples of using Amiibo functionality correctly. Check out this in action below at 10:00:
